Fun things to do when you live at Campanilla.

There’s a reason the swallows return to San Juan Capistrano every year. This is one of Southern California’s most beautiful spots, a classic seaside town with a sense of history and a sense of fun. Here’s a bird’s eye view of just a few fun things for grown-ups and kids to see and do here.

• The Mission San Juan Capistrano. Established in 1776, this is one of 21 missions that connected cities along the California coast’s Camino Real. Its 10 acres house adobe-style buildings, museums, gardens, fountains and exhibits.

• Los Rios District. Orange County’s oldest neighborhood is home to 200 years of architectural styles from adobes to Victorian. Highlights include the Combs House, the Ramos House and the O’Neill Museum, headquarter of the San Juan Capistrano Historical Society.

• San Onofre State Park. This 3,000-acre park is one of the five most visited in California, attracting surfers, bicyclists, hikers and campers, as well as sea lions, dolphins and whales.

• Ronald Caspers Wilderness Park. Acres of gorgeous scenery, 30 miles of hiking trails, streams and wildlife preserve make this a popular destination for day trippers and overnight camping. No pets allowed, however, so leave your buddies home.

• The Coach House. The local concert venue for local and national musical acts also serves food. It’s a fun night out for music buffs.

• San Juan Summer Nights. Held in historic Town Center Park, this summer concert series features live music, food, beer and wine booths, and youth areas with free activities.

• Fiesta de las Golodrinas. An annual event tied to the legendary return of the swallows to the mission on St. Joseph’s Day, March 19. The event includes the Swallows’ Day parade, Taste of San Juan, Kids’ Pet Parade, El Presidente Ball, the Fiesta Grande and the Mercado street fair and market place.

Did you know?

San Juan Capistrano is the equestrian capital of the west coast. There are over 53 miles of local trails, an Olympic Field, seven boarding stables and training centers. It all celebrates the area’s ranching history.
