iPhone Apps for Home Improvement

How did we ever do without our smartphones? Just when you think you’ve seen everything they can do, somebody comes up with another new app. If you’re a dedicated do-it-yourselfer, I’ve discovered a tool-box full of apps for iPhones that will strike joy in the heart of every handyman. Here are some of my favorites. If you’ve found a great smartphone app for home improvement, tell us about it.

Home 3D

It’s architecture and interior design for your home. An all-around tool that lets you design based on exact dimensions or blueprint of your home. Intended for remodeling hobbyists, architects and interior designers, it lets you resize rooms, try out paint and wall covering, arrange furniture and even take a virtual tour through your creation. Available at iTunes for $1.99, Dream Home brings you a wide range of design ideas for every room in your house. Select by room type or design style. 

Designing a new home or remodeling? Home Size by Armchair Designs lets you estimate the size and function of your dream home, or calculate the square footage of your existing home. For $1.99 at iTunes.

Get your daily design and decorating fix for free from For free, Remodelista provides a daily deco fix. This online design sourcebook is a popular must-read with design devotees, stylists and architects. 

Or, for more inspiration, check out the Trends app for iPhone. For 99 cents, you can review a large selection of completed home design projects.

For color design and paint selection, take a look at Ben Color Capture from Benjamin Moore and ColorSnap from Sherwin-Williams. They’re both free. Create your own custom color schemes free with Palettes. Or, for $1.99, organize all the paint colors you have or will use in your DIY projects with Paint Swatches.

Lighting is a huge part of design. With the free GE Moodcam you can take a picture of a room and see how shifting the light alters the mood.

Plan basic designs for interior and exterior doors and windows with this free app from Marvin.
