Storage Ideas for Downsizing Homeowners: The Role of Cabinets in a Smaller Space

By Steve Atwood, VP of Construction Operations at Taylor Morrison, Inc.

We asked. They told. We listened. The 55 and Better market craves storage solutions in their homes – and lots of it.

Maybe they are downsizing from a much larger home. Perhaps they have accumulated large collections, valuable antiques, or precious family heirlooms. When you’re at this stage of your life, it’s easy to have lots and lots of stuff.

We’re building the NEXTadventure™ Home (a 2000+ sq ft single family home) specifically for that market segment. And we’ve implemented seriously stylish and fresh storage solutions all over the house.

Cabinets, cabinets, everywhere.

I’ve personally never seen so many cabinets in a home of this size. There are cabinets in the kitchen, laundry room, and messy kitchen. They are in the master bedroom. Even the family dog has his own cabinet space – and it’s in the shape of a doghouse, no less! NEXTAdventure’s™ key sponsor is Timberlake, and they supplied our project with more cabinets than we ever imagined. The result is a home with a place for everything, and everything in its place.

Broom closets just make sense.

Why not take use the 3-1/2 “ depth of a nonbearing framed wall that you can open up the cavity? It’s usually just dead space. Finish, paint and install swing doors on the front and you’ll have a 3-1/2 “ space tall enough and deep enough to hold mops, Swiffers, and other tools of the trade for basic clean up.

A place for Fido, and all of his STUFF.

Another clutter culprit? The numerous pet supplies and things we need to keep those tails wagging. Food, toys, treats, leashes, and harnesses can really pile up in a hallway. This clever cabinet solution (seen above) is one of our favorite features of The NEXTadventure™ Home. No more tripping over squeaky toys or bags of kibble!

The use of creative storage can really innovate and elevate a space, making it easy for homeowners to fall in love with their new digs. Take the time to walk through your build-out with an open mind, and think about every nook and cranny. What can you do with a 4” wall space?
