There are millions of pet parents who are looking for their dream homes and 99 percent of those pet owners say they consider their pet to be family. When they’re searching for a home, 95 percent of pet owners believe it is important that a home community allows animals.

A recent study shows that Americans’ love for their pets impacted several parts of the home buying, selling and owning experience. Last year more than $66 billion was spent on pets in the U.S., with $70 billion projected for 2017.

Results of the Study

  • 89 percent of pet owners say they would not give up their pet because of a housing restriction
  • 81 percent of Americans say their pets play a role in their housing situation
  • 31 percent of animal owners did not put in an offer on a home because it was not a good situational fit for their animals
  • 19 percent of Americans say they would think about moving for their pet
  • 12 percent have moved for their pet
