Enchanting Events and Engagements in Frisco, Texas at the Discovery Center
People looking to expand their horizons through the arts and sciences will find spending a day at the Frisco Discovery Center to be an exhilarating experience.
This crown jewel is a bustling open-air, warehouse-like facility that began as a collaboration between the City of Frisco and the Frisco Community Development Corporation. Since then, it has become the epicenter for arts and sciences in north Texas.
It’s home to several art galleries, special conference rooms, education rooms, and a black box theater. The center also has two nonprofit businesses as tenants.
So what exactly does the Frisco Discovery Center offer? Keep reading to find out…
Paintings and Media Galore
The Frisco Discovery Center’s art gallery has four exhibit spaces where a variety of amateur and professional artists showcase the best of their work. As a way of saying thank you to the local community, some artists, like Abdollah Ardekani, offer free art shows to the public. His recent art show is a photography exhibit that showcases the lives and trials of nomadic people living in Iran.
The main gallery’s layout, lighting, and color scheme make it a work of art, all its own. The reception gallery is located next to the black box theater. Its location and size are perfect for smaller exhibits that may correspond with the theme of productions or interests of theatre attendees.
The Discovery Center also has two smaller galleries that are available to rent for private viewings and special events. With four constantly changing art exhibits, there is always something new to see at the Frisco Discovery Center
Plays, Concerts, and Movies
The Discovery Center’s Black Box Theater is a professional quality performing facility that’s fully equipped with lighting, sound, projection screens, concession stands, backstage dressing and green rooms.
The theatre gives local performers and touring artists the opportunity to perform in an intimate atmosphere where they can showcase their talents to an audience of up to 120 people.
The stage is often home to performances by local performing arts groups like the Plano Symphony Orchestra and The Institute for Global Music and Arts. The Frisco Improv Players fill the room with comedic stylings, and the Frisco Community Theatre and Frisco Area Children’s Theatre provide premiere performances fit for adults and little ones alike.
Get Your Game On
Located inside the Frisco Discovery Center is the National Videogame Museum, a nonprofit organization with a mission to document as much about the history of the videogame industry as possible.
The museum offers gamers young and old the opportunity to experience the best of gaming history or to catch a glimpse of what’s coming in the future of electronic entertainment. In the Timeline of Consoles Exhibit, visitors can learn the stories behind the creation of some of the most memorable games in video game history. The Pixel Dreams retro arcade gives everyone an opportunity to relive the 80s and previous days of arcade glory. In the Prehistoric Exhibit, guests try their hand at games like Pong and Breakout on a dinosaur-sized television.
The National Videogame Museum offers free guided tours on Sunday afternoons and hosts camps and workshops designed to give up and coming video game creators a head start in their careers. In the summer, coding classes are held as day camps for children. The museum also teaches evening classes for those wanting to get into coding.
Unwrap Your World
The Frisco Discovery Center is also home to the Sci-Tech Discovery Center, another nonprofit that focuses on teaching science, math and technology in an interactive format. The Sci-Tech Discovery Center is a place where STEM and Robotic learning come alive in the hopes of inspiring the world’s next creators, scientists, and engineers.
The center has permanent exhibits like Lego Tracks, Bodies in Balance, and Nanoscience, and also hosts revolving exhibits that center around robotics and other advanced technologies.
Much like the National Videogame Museum, the Sci-Tech Discovery Center offers a variety of events for children of all ages. On Fridays, preschoolers can come in for story time on cool subjects like bugs, plants, or rainbows.
During the summer, children in grades 1 through 8 can spend a week in one of the center’s STEM summer camps, where they can learn how to be a detective, a spy, or solve mysteries in a crime lab. Teachers often bring classes for science learning and fun.
