Preparing to Move

You’ve closed the deal and suddenly it’s real! Now it’s time to think about the actual move. A great way to start moving preparations is to create two lists: a Need List and a To-Do List. This will help you make sure you have all the logistics down and the materials and items on hand when you need them.

A typical Need List will include things like boxes, bubble wrap, newspaper, tape and other packing materials. You might want to add new locks to the list depending upon whether the home you’re moving into is brand new or not; if it’s been lived in before, changing out the locks is a good idea.

For your To-Do List, outline you’ll need to complete. Real Simple magazine online offers a handy moving checklist to make sure you’ve got everything covered. The checklist has some great details, but moving generally comes down to these steps:

  1. Research moving company options
  2. Organize everything from school and medical records to change of address information and prescription refills
  3. Pack up your things, giving away or tossing items you won’t use or need
