Oscar Scherer State Park
Tucked away quietly between Sarasota and Venice, you’ll find Oscar Scherer State Park, a hidden gem for bicyclists, hikers, birdwatchers, and people who simply enjoy being in nature. While it was donated to the state by Elsa Scherer Burrows in memory of her father Oscar and developed as a preserved natural space in the face of rapid urban development in the area, it was later joined with 922 neighboring acres to protect the Florida scrub-jay territory and is now the only protected scrub-jay population in southwest Florida with a long-term chance of survival. Along with the scrub jay, you may spot the majestic bald eagle, who nests here in the winter, on your visit. Whether you’re in the mood for hiking, swimming, fishing, camping, or geoseeking…scout out this little oasis in the midst of the suburban sprawl that blends preservation with recreation.
