How to do Your Part on Beach Day

Taking care of your local beaches is part of being a good citizen and an active member of the community. July 1st through 7th is National Keep Beaches Clean Week, which means this is a wonderful time to get out and soak up the sun while leaving the beach cleaner and prettier than when you arrived.

How to Prepare for a Beach Clean Up

Looking after your favorite beach is easy and fun. All you’ve got to do is plan ahead and bring a few tools and the right attitude on your regular beach day!

Always Pack:

  • A pair of sturdy rubber gloves or thick cloth/leather work gloves
  • A plastic bucket or old shopping bag to collect trash
  • Your smartphone or camera to take before and after photos – not to show off but to inspire others to pitch in and clean the beach, too

A good rule to remember when you’re at the beach is, “If you see it and it’s safe to do so, pick it up! Even if it’s not yours.

Get the Little Ones Involved

Teaching kids about conservation at a young age helps to make sure our beaches stay pristine for generations to come. Make beach cleanup a fun activity you do at the start of every beach day to develop the habit. You can consider ordering a copy of Join the No-Plastic Challenge!: A First Book of Reducing Waste by Scot Ritchie to inspire kiddos to learn about plastic pollution and how to keep it out of our oceans and waterways.

Try making it a game to get kids excited. See who can collect the most pieces of plastic in fifteen minutes or print out a scavenger hunt that includes common items like bottle tops, straws, cups, plastic bags, and wrappers. Keep it simple by carrying two bags or buckets when collecting shells, one for treasure and one for trash.

How to Organize a Beach Cleanup Crew

For a more comprehensive cleanup effort, you can also get a team together to do a full cleanup at a particularly littered stretch of beach. Always cover safety with the group before heading out – cover dangerous items like broken glass and needles and how to keep an eye out for big waves when picking up trash along the waterline. Watch out for storms or lightning and head back to the car if need be.

  • Pack tools like shovels and litter tongs to pick up and dispose of dangerous items
  • Be sure to separate items that require special disposal such as old batteries or sharp objects
