The construction industry may remain male-dominated, but here at Taylor Morrison, we’re proud to be knocking down barriers. In the past decade, we’ve seen a 777% increase in women who hold construction roles!
Welcome to Women in Construction Week, which celebrates and promotes the role of women in the construction industry. Read on for illuminating statistics, a quote from our very own Chairman and CEO, Sheryl Palmer, and a feature on Tracey Michaels, a Taylor Morrison Superintendent in Jacksonville, FL.
By the Numbers
At Taylor Morrison, an increasing number of women are growing their careers in the construction industry. Here are a few stats we’re proud to share:
- We have 45% female representation in the workforce – just over four times the U.S. construction industry average of 11%.
- Chairman and CEO Sheryl Palmer remains as the only female that has ever led a publicly traded homebuilder and has been in her role since 2007.
- Our Board of Directors has a female majority, the highest in the industry.
A Few Words
Sheryl Palmer, Chairman and CEO of Taylor Morrison, reflects.
“With the homebuilding industry being traditionally male dominated, we’re incredibly proud of the women at Taylor Morrison who continue to challenge that status quo and pursue the immense opportunities this meaningful career can provide for everyone. As an organization, we have experienced a growing number of women joining our workforce and are excited that they’re paving the way for people from all backgrounds to consider a career in construction.”
Breaking Barriers with Tracey Michaels

Tracey and her dad, Lee
Tracey is always up for a challenge, beginning as an Aviation Electrician in the Navy. She attributes her skill set to her dad, Lee, who taught her how to paint houses and handle home repairs.
After five years with Taylor Morrison, nearly 100 home deliveries, and a model built in just under 60 days, Tracey is just getting started.
The Numbers

Tracey was in the Navy from 1991 to 1995, which was a time when women were first allowed to serve on combat ships. For some perspective: There were about 10 women to 4,000 men on a carrier.
Let’s Hear from Tracey
“I’ve always been in a field that has been male dominated, and I never thought about it twice. I was in the same space because I was passionate about my craft and that’s all that mattered to me.”
From Warranty to Building
Although Tracey began her career on the Warranty side of the house, her heart was always leaning in a more hands-on direction.
“I love starting from dirt and seeing a completed product in the end,” Tracey said. There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing the joy on a homeowner’s face after delivering their dream home.”
A Day in the Life as a Jacksonville Superintendent

Tracy is on-site by 7:30 am every day. She begins the day doing two of her favorite things:
- Walking her houses to check for quality and progress. She even takes notes old school style (yes, with a notebook and a pen)!
- Talking to our trade partners, including electricians, roofers, plumbers, and many more.
Building More Than Homes
Tracy sums it up perfectly herself. “I still have a key to one of my homeowners’ homes I closed years and years ago. I come over and let the dogs out. It’s those types of special relationships I truly appreciate.”
Thanks for Reading!
Hard hats off to Tracey and all the women trailblazing the way in construction!
